Broadway Strike:no nooooooooo

There's Another Strike: On Broadway

broadway2.jpgA stagehand strike which started today shut down most of the Broadway shows. The union members of Local One, belonging to the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, began picketing in the rain at 10 AM. News reports say 27 Broadway shows, including Wicked, Jersey Boys, The Lion King and Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical were shuttered going in to the holiday season when most of these shows enjoy their best attendance. (Tourists accounted for about 65% of the 12.3 million tickets bought for NYC shows in the 2006-07 season, the largest % in the two decades.) The walkout over work rules took place after negotiations broke down with the League of American Theaters And Producers.

PS:I love Broadway!!!!!!!

Hollywood Writers Strike: A Chance For Millions Online To Bloom

strike.jpgHollywood film and television writers go on strike today in a move that will slowly cripple the big media production machine.

The strike relates to demands by writers for higher residual payments for DVD sales and internet downloads, and follows the breakdown of 3 months of negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.

The Writers Guild of America last went on strike in 1988, in a dispute that lasted 5 months.

Shows expected to immediately disappear from the airwaves include NBC’s Tonight Show and Late Night, CBS’ Late Show and Late, Late Show, ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live and Comedy Central’s The Daily Show and The Colbert Report.

Producers have been aware of the possibility of a strike for some months and have stockpiled scripts and show episodes so most regular pre-recorded shows should not be affected for the immediate future, however if the strike lasts over the longer term it is likely that the networks will start resorting to reruns and game shows to fill airtime as fresh product runs out.

The strike poses an interesting challenge for television at a time where internet usage has surpassed TV viewing time in most homes. Users are already choosing online entertainment over TV, how many more will switch off their televisions when their favorite shows stop going to air? These eyeballs present a real opportunity for online content creators at all levels; from the VC funded video startups through to the DIY part timers. The trends in viewer numbers have all been headed online to this point, this strike could well accelerate this trend, particularly if it lasts over the long term. It will be a chance for millions online to bloom.*

Writers' Block: The WGA on Strike

"Lucky for the writers, the strike comes at the beginning of NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month), and those who have always wanted to write the Great American Novel can come home from the picket line and join the over 100,000 people working to finish their 50,000-word novel by the end of the month.

Hopefully when they come back to work, there will still be people left who want to watch their shows."

More Love Letters From Our Most Favored Nation, Thank You John, Sam, and Fred.

thelastinkling Posted something interesting today on dhgrassrevolt.wordpress.com
The first few lines are here:

”More Love Letters From Our Most Favored Nation”   by SK Johnson   10-14-07
The United States trade debt was $57.6 billion in August of this past year.
The amount of manufacturing jobs in this country have plummeted in recent years.
China has made billions off of our bad trade deals with them.
So, what have they been doing with the money?
 Let’s investigate that a bit:
—–The Financial Times, Sept. 3, 2007: “The Chinese military hacked into a Pentagon computer network in June in the most successful cyber attack on the US defence department, say American officials. “
—-Things like these, which may be DF-25’s (description following) have been built:

—”The land-based mobile-launch DF-25 is a a two-stage solid-fuel missile with a range of 1,700 kilometers. While the ranges of DF-25 and DF-21 are approximately the same, the nuclear-tipped DF-21 has a throw-weight of 600kg, compared to the conventionally armed DF-25’s 2,000kg. […]

A Byte Out of History on

A Byte Out of History
Terror on Wall Street
The lunch rush was just beginning as a man driving a cart pressed an old horse forward on a mid-September day in 1920. He stopped his heavy load in the heart of Wall Street, then quickly disappeared. Within minutes, the cart exploded into a hail of metal fragments, killing more than 30 people. Full Story

"He’s going to speak from Al Asad Air Base at 12:30 or so. We’ll probably have a few minutes of highlights. The choice of Anbar over Baghdad is symbolic, of course, to call attention to the security gains made there since last year. He’s in town for six hours but he’s got"

"     JS: [Those reports] are not accurate, and that is a fabrication at best. This was a planned turnover of the Palace and the PJCC to Iraqi control, to the Iraqi legitimate government forces. It was done to standard with, and to well-trained, well-equipped Iraqi Security Forces. There were some peaceful demonstrations that were celebratory in nature, but at no time was any Coalition forces threatened, and the local Iraqi officials under General Mohan, kept a good handle on the situation in Basra.

HH: So what is the situation then in Basra, because that Washington Post story made it sound like the Wild West without the saloons.

JS: It was a demonstration of OMS, or Shia people there that were celebrating, to the best of my knowledge, the return of an Iraqi landmark to the Iraqi government."

R"on Paul Delegates who paid to vote were not allowed in. See Tyranny in Texas on Youtube. The Results of the poll are not accurate. It won't ever make it to the news but citizens who were there taped it. What a sad place we have come when outright fraud occurs by the GOP and it never makes the news. Shows the agenda of the media. I wonder who actually won and what the real numbers would have been."
Ron Paul spin
"It seems to be the consensus that although Congressman Duncan Hunter officially won the Texas straw poll, the actual winner was Senator Fred Thompson, who didn't even show up or send a surrogate. Such is the thirst among conservatives for a man that can face and beat Rudy and then Hillary."

Duncan Hunter Ninth place is just the start

Duncan Hunter: Ninth place is just the start. The California congressman told CNN’s “Late Edition” that he would continue to campaign in Iowa despite a disappointing performance. “This is the first full week I have spent in Iowa in this campaign,” Hunter said. “I got lots of people who signed up for my campaign. … This is the start of my campaign. We are going to get out, work hard. It is a bright morning in Iowa.”

Yesterday Was My Last Day With The Duncan Hunter Campaign

Yesterday Was My Last Day With The Duncan Hunter Campaign

If you're wondering why I had guest bloggers for the last couple of days, it was because my time with the Duncan Hunter campaign was winding down and I wanted to take a little extra time to get the loose ends sewed up before I left.

Also, it's worth noting that it was a friendly, planned exit. In fact, I put in my notice roughly 30 days ago. As to why, well you have to understand: when I started, I only intended to work for 90 days. However, before it was over, I ended up working with the campaign as a blog consultant for six months.

During that time, the Duncan Hunter campaign did more to reach out to bloggers than any other candidate.

We did 3 blogger teleconferences, put together a video aimed at conservatives on the net, and we did a considerable number of guest blogs, columns, and interviews (There are actually still a few in the works that were set up before I left)

Additionally, I had an opportunity to set up our YouTube page, MySpace page, & our final Facebook page, along with helping out on the website -- among other duties.

It was a great experience, I enjoyed it a lot, and now, more than ever, I am convinced that Duncan Hunter would be the best candidate that the GOP could run in 2008. Not only is he the most conservative candidate and the man whose views match up the best with the base, I believe that he would be the most electable candidate that we could run.

Still, I'm a blogger who consults on the side, not a consultant who blogs on the side, and so, with it getting later in the campaign season, I felt like I needed to go ahead and leave the campaign so that I could talk about the 2008 race in the homestretch without people having to wonder if I could speak honestly with my boss in the running.

PS: Speaking of that, in the future, I will mention that I used to consult for Duncan Hunter when I write about him, but I will no longer mention the consulting gig at the end of my posts in other circumstances (although I will add something to the FAQ about it).

orces Kill Two Terrorists, Capture 19 in Iraq Today

WASHINGTON, July 13, 2007 – Coalition forces killed two terrorists and detained 19 suspects during combat operations in central and western Iraq today.

Forces targeted al Qaeda in Iraq leaders during raids on several buildings in Tarmiyah. During the raids, coalition forces detained six suspects, including an alleged weapons facilitator in Anbar province with close ties to al-Qaeda senior leaders.

A separate raid in Tarmiyah netted two more suspects tied to the religious emir of al Qaeda in Iraq.

West of Taji, forces captured eight suspects, including one allegedly involved in coordinating suicide operations and importing weapons.

Forces raided two buildings in southwestern Baghdad and detained three more suspects.

In other Iraq operations today, coalition forces captured a high-ranking “special groups” cell leader during a pre-dawn raid in Baghdad. He is suspected of coordinating logistical support from Iran and is believed to have directed attacks against coalition forces.

In other Iraq operations this week:

--Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers, with Iraqi security force counterparts, killed nine insurgents and detained 13 more in a fire fight yesterday in the New Baghdad district of eastern Baghdad.

--Multinational Division Baghdad attack helicopter crews destroyed a homemade explosive factory and cache yesterday northwest of Baghdad.

--Elements of the 4th Iraqi Army Brigade detained the leader of a terrorist sniper cell in Bayji yesterday. He is suspected of leading attacks against Iraqi and coalition forces. Two others were detained during the operation.

--Multinational Division Baghdad troops detained 31 suspected insurgents at a suspected al Qaeda meeting in the Rashid district July 11.

--Iraqi army soldiers, with their coalition counterparts, found an improvised explosive device factory during a raid in Mosul's al Sina'a neighborhood July 11. Forces found materials used to make improvised explosive devices including an acetylene tank, fertilizer, sugar and an industrial-grade sifter. Coalition forces detained 18 suspects.

--Coalition forces continue the hunt for insurgents responsible for firing 11 indirect fire rounds into Baghdad civilian neighborhoods July 11. Eleven 120 mm mortar rounds impacted in the Amil and Baladiat areas of eastern Baghdad. In the past week, insurgent-delivered indirect fire attacks targeted areas in the New Baghdad and Rashid security districts.

--Multinational Division Baghdad troops detained more than 100 suspects and seized more than 200 weapons caches during Operation Dragon Hammer in the Rashid district of the Iraqi capital July 1 to 11. The operation, launched by the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team “Dragons,” 1st Infantry Division, targeted suspected terrorists by interdicting their supply chains.
